CAN ABACUS DO DIVISION?
What is Division? It is the opposite function of Multiplication. Once children are thorough with
Multiplication tables 1 to 9 they can do wonders in abacus method. Normally we take into account the
number of digits in dividend and the number of digit in the divisor to work on the abacus when we teach
division. Normally the divisor is not put in any of the rods. The value of dividend should be placed
on the rod considering the number of digits as mentioned above and children should start solving the
problem. Final answer can be read in the abacus once done. IPA has a trick or unique way of teaching
division like to start with double digits divided by single digit, three digits divide by single
digit, keep increasing the digits by selection of rods for the dividend and keep the divisor in the
memory. Once the basic concept of division is clear children can be taught division with higher digits.
In fact children come out with the solution on their own.
Now we will look into how abacus can be used in mathematics. Abacus is a brain development programme
using abacus as a tool and mental maths as the media which keeps the brain active. Children imagine the
beads and are able to solve the problems with great speed and accuracy. It helps them in
mental maths problems in the school as well excel in any competitive exams plus their day today
activities which involve numbers. Hence mathematical use of abacus has no limits.
